Prior to embarking on his legal career, Rob worked in the Alberta oil patch and as a Biologist on Canada’s west coast. After completing his LL.B. at the University of Victoria, Rob began his legal career as an articling student with Bennett Jones LLP, Calgary’s largest law firm. Following his articles, Bennett Jones hired Rob on as Associate Counsel. In 2005, Rob accepted a position as Corporate Counsel at Fording Canadian Coal Trust, at the time Canada’s largest income trust, and was also Corporate Counsel to Fording’s subsidiary, the Elk Valley Coal Partnership. The Elk Valley Coal Partnership was and continues to be, the world’s second-largest producer of sea-born metallurgical coking coal. In 2008, Teck Cominco Limited acquired Fording Canadian Coal Trust. Rob remained with the Elk Valley Coal Partnership, which changed its name to the Teck Coal Partnership.
In late 2012, Rob left Teck to become a founding partner of Douglas Robertson LLP. During his tenure with Douglas Robertson LLP, Rob focused his attention on assisting clients with matters pertaining to estate planning, business succession, and estate administration. Rob founded Bastion Estate Law in 2018 to further expand the estate planning and administration services offered to his clients. Bastion Estate Law includes onsite litigation support services to complement Rob’s trust and estate administration services in a manner that is more convenient and cost-effective for clients. Rob’s background in the energy and mining sectors, ranging from his early days working in the field through his later work on some of the largest energy deals in Canada, provide him with a valuable “ground up” understanding of Canadian industry. This experience is invaluable to him when assisting clients with estate planning matters that include structuring inter-generational wealth transfer and business succession planning.
In addition to being a member of the Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association, Rob has his Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) designation and is a proud member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).
